How Does CBD Impact Human Health and Wellbeing?

CBD

CBD – short for Cannabidiol – is an active compound inside the cannabis plant that’s getting a lot of press lately. For decades, cannabis has been most famous for a compound inside it called THC (the one associated with all the high and stoned sensations). As it turns out, CBD offers a myriad of health, therapeutic and wellness benefits but causes no high or disorienting feelings for the user.

CBD has been dubbed a “miracle molecule” by those who have studied it, mainly for its non-intoxicating, non-euphoric effects that work well for people who don’t want to feel high all the time. Like any conventional medication, CBD can be used as part of a daily wellness regime by those who prefer to medicate naturally and don’t feel like potentially getting addicted to prescription medications like opioids. CBD is also non-toxic, non-addictive and leaves many people feeling calm, relaxed and with a sense of general wellbeing.

To get technical for just a moment, CBD is one of 165 phytocannabinoids inside Hemp. These phytocannabinoids, as they’re called, are unique terpeno-phenolic molecules produced only by the Hemp plant. CBD is popular with many people as it produces no mental high and helps to treat conditions like insomnia, anxiety, depression, epilepsy, pain, and drug addiction. Research to date has been limited when it comes to CBD, mainly due to decades of prohibition even for study purposes. What we do know is that CBD is a strong anti-inflammatory agent and a potent antioxidant that enhances the activity of the endocannabinoid system. This system, present in all humans, regulates things like sleep, appetite, and mood and is activated by cannabis compounds specifically.

Conditions That CBD Can Treat Effectively

According to a World Health Organization report from 2017, the diseases, ailments & disorders that can be treated by CBD are:

Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, Hypoxia-ischemia injury, Pain perception, Psychosis, Anxiety, Depression, Cancer, Nausea. Vomiting, Inflammatory diseases, Rheumatoid arthritis, Infection, Inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, Cardio-vascular diseases & Diabetic complications.

CBD is effective because it interacts with more than 60 target proteins in our body including neurotransmitter receptors, enzymes, ion channels & intracellular transporters. The Endocannabinoid System regulates mental and physical functions by means of something called homeostasis (inner balance).

Therapeutic Effects of CBD for Mental Disorders

As well as effectively counteracting the effects of THC – the compound in cannabis that makes you high and causes some people to experience anxiety and paranoia. As CBD is a natural and safe anxiolytic agent, it has the ability to decrease symptoms of psychosis, schizophrenia, depression & paranoia. CBD works as a powerful activator of the serotonin receptor that regulates anxiety and treats depression. Moreover, CBD affects GABA receptors associated with sleep and helps to relax the mind and release muscle tension or spasms. CBD also activates the central & peripheral cannabinoid receptors to balance the central nervous system [CNS] and boost an overall sense of well being.

Effects of CBD on Sleep Quality

Many people choose CBD to treat insomnia in favor of sleeping pills often prescribed by doctors. For many, CBD offers the same effects as sleeping pills but in a totally natural and holistic way. CBD doesn’t just help people to fall asleep, it helps them to stay asleep for longer periods. It does this by inhibiting cellular uptake of adenosine via inhibition of a protein carrier (ENT-1) at low nanomolar concentrations. Adenosine system signaling plays an important role in neuroprotection as well as in the treatment of sleep and mood disorders. CBD is known to block the adenosine carrier leaving an abundance of sedating neurotransmitters in the brain. At the same time, CBD is also used to encourage healthy nerve & brain cell growth in order to treat neurodegenerative diseases that can, in some cases, lead to mental disorders.

CBD for Fitness & Sports

While cannabis and sports have never traditionally collided, that reality is slowly changing. When coaches and medical experts working in the sports industry found out that CBD can boost injury recovery and enhance performance, they took the right decision to take a closer look. Firstly, CBD works as an anti-inflammatory agent that speeds up recovery time for muscles, tendons, joints & bones. CBD can also help athletes to boost their energy levels and endurance by encouraging the endocannabinoid system which regulates mental and physical functions. More than that, CBD regulates blood sugar levels and heart function, resulting in less insulin production and less fat storage. CBD also interferes with cortisol production and that helps to protect the integrity of muscle tissue. What that means for athletes is that CBD can help to speed up recovery between workouts or training sessions, for better overall performance all round.

Medicinal effects of CBD

Unlike THC which can make some people feel disoriented, docile and even confused, CBD has no such effect. Without entering into too much medical detail, CBD promotes a general sense of calm and wellbeing without distorting any of the senses. Numerous studies on animals have found CBD to be effective for treating issues like pain, inflammation oxidative stress and autoimmune diseases, to name but a few. Studies have also found that CBD has a positive effect on the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, bones, muscles, and the whole digestive tract. CBD also has a remarkable effect on the brain due to neuroplasticity – whereby new synapses and neurons can be reformed in the Cerebellum, Hippocampus & Prefrontal cortex areas of the brain.

What Other Conditions Can CBD Treat?

The real truth is that no one really knows the answer to this question. The limited research and animal studies carried out on CBD to date have given some insight into its numerous benefits. However, as cannabis legalization spreads rapidly across North America and other parts of the world, cannabis and its compounds are now being studied in-depth for the first time in history. While we already know that CBD helps people suffering from anxiety, pain, inflammation, and sleeplessness, CBD has also been successful in the treatment of things like social phobias, depression, skin diseases like Acne, IBS, Crohn’s disease, MS, autism, bacterial infections, PTSD, ADHD. The list goes on and on, suffice it say that CBD is a fantastic all-round natural solution for a range of conditions and medical ailments.
