Below, we’ll discuss these issues (and more) in detail, why they prevent a fully satisfying CBD experience, and what you can do to make sure you get the full benefits that CBD has to offer.

Problem #1: Using CBD Products with Low Bioavailability 

The biggest problem customers face when trying to use CBD products is the lack of bioavailability. In short, bioavailability refers to how easily medicine or other substances  (including CBD) can be absorbed into your body. If you’re using a CBD product with low bioavailability, then you may not have had enough CBD absorbed into your body to feel the active .

Factors that Affect Bioavailability

Not sure what impacts CBD’s bioavailability? There are several factors that can increase, or decrease, CBD’s ability to absorb into your bloodstream:

  • Method of Use: Patches or inhaled forms of CBD usually have higher levels of bioavailability because in this delivery method, the CBD avoids the digestive system. Ingestible forms of CBD, like oils or capsules, usually have low levels of bioavailability, since your digestive system destroys most of the CBD.
  • Product Purity: If your CBD product has ingredient fillers or contaminants, you’re not going to get the levels of absorption you would with pure CBD products.
  • Product Design: Certain CBD products may be specifically designed from the beginning to increase bioavailability (like PhenoLife). This is especially important for ingestible forms of CBD, since it has to survive harsh stomach acids. 

Problem #2: Using the Wrong CBD Formula

Another common issue we see customers face is the wrong kind of CBD formula. If you don’t get a CBD formula that’s a good match for your challenge, then you may not get the results you were hoping for. Let’s take a look at the different kinds of CBD formulas that you’ll commonly see on the market.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD is the same as full-spectrum CBD, except the trace amounts of THC have been removed. This may allow customers to still benefit from the entourage effect from other cannabinoids and terpenes present in the products while avoiding THC.

CBD-Isolate

Products made with CBD-isolate will contain only CBD. None of the other cannabinoids or terpenes present in the sourced hemp will be present. This means customers won’t be able to benefit from the entourage effect, and customers will generally pay a premium price, since isolating CBD requires extensive processing.

Catered Formulas

Many CBD brands create CBD formulas that include other active ingredients to help target specific health challenges. Choosing a CBD product that’s targeted to help anxiety when you’re looking to manage chronic pain might not give you the results you were hoping for.

Problem #3: Inconsistent or Improper CBD Dosing

This is one of the most common problems we see with customers that say that they felt some effects from CBD but never got the results they were looking for. It’s a confusing issue because most customers will feel CBD the very first time they take it, but they won’t get the best results on the first dose

To start, your first dose is not likely to be the amount of CBD you take forever. Regardless of what CBD product you use, we usually recommend our customers start with low doses and slowly work their way up as they understand how a specific product will make them feel. Starting with a huge CBD dose can cause uncomfortable side-effects.

CBD Needs Consistent Dosing To Work

Not only do you need to work up to your ideal dose of CBD, but you need to regularly take it to begin to feel the best effects. Usually, this takes up around 10 days of daily CBD dosing of any product you choose. We’ve noticed many customers take CBD for just a few days and quit without giving the CBD enough time to fully saturate the body. 

Give yourself time to find the ideal dose and then consistently take that dose for the best effects.

Problem #4: Choosing the Wrong Delivery System

As we mentioned in the previous point, different forms of CBD offer different advantages for customers. Certain delivery methods of CBD are better for helping to manage certain health challenges, and a delivery mismatch can make it feel like CBD isn’t offering the benefits it’s supposed to. Here’s a quick overview of the primary kinds of CBD and what to expect use:

Inhalable Forms of CBD

Forms of CBD that you can inhale will enter your bloodstream the fastest, and since it bypasses your digestive system, the bioavailability of inhaled CBD is generally high (around 30%). This form of CBD is great for sudden, unexpected problems, like acute pain or a panic attack, but the effects don’t last very long compared to ingestible forms of CBD or transdermal patches.

Transdermal CBD Patches

Transdermal CBD patches allow for consistent CBD dosing for up to 8 hours, and with bioavailability levels at 80%, they are perfect for consistent, long-term dosing. However, it can take a while for the CBD to absorb through your skin and reach your bloodstream, which makes patches a poor choice for sudden, unexpected issues. 

Also, transdermal patches are not the same as topical CBD lotions. Topical lotions may provide some local relief directly where applied, but they are not designed to deliver CBD into the bloodstream. That means using lotions to help with widespread pain or anxiety will never provide the results you want.

Ingestible Forms of CBD

Finally, ingestible forms of CBD, while popular, have notoriously low bioavailability levels. Most ingestible forms only have 6% bioavailability, which means products like oils, tinctures, or capsules need extra potent, consistent doses to be effective. Ingestible CBD tends to have longer effects than inhalable forms of CBD and will usually take effect faster than transdermal patches.

In the UK, the CBD isn’t regulated by a formal government body. That means it’s up to CBD brands to police themselves to provide pure, high-grade products. Some less reputable brands will add fillers to their CBD products (and not disclose it), or they may be lying about how much CBD is in their products. 

This is a common issue. A performed by the National Institute of Health showed that, from their sampling of CBD products, 26% contained less CBD than advertised, while 43% contained more CBD than advertised. This same study also showed that 21% of these products also contained THC levels above the legal limit, which was “enough to intoxicate children.”

Independent, 3rd party tests are the first thing you should look for in any CBD product.

Let’s discuss how works for CBD products, and why it’s so to make sure any CBD product you buy has been tested.

How CBD Testing Works: The Process

The process of testing CBD is simple. A brand will send a sample to an independent, 3rd party lab, and that lab will run a test to see all the compounds or impurities that might be in the product. For CBD products, a lab result will show:

  • All cannabinoids and terpenes naturally present in the sourced
  • Any impurities present, like heavy metals or pesticides

Most brands have lab results available on their website for easy viewing, while others will have information on where to see lab results on their product packaging. Often, brands may incorporate both to make sure that customers have easy access to lab reports.

What is 3rd Party Testing

Third party testing means that the lab that is testing the CBD products is not affiliated with the brand or the CBD industry in any way. The separation of the lab from the entire CBD industry helps remove any potential conflict of interests, and customers can fully trust the results from the lab.

The Importance of Testing

Third party testing is crucially important to making sure your CBD product is pure and safe. Most countries (including the USA and the UK), don’t regulate the CBD industry, which means there’s no legal consequence for a brand to lie about how pure their product is. 

If your CBD product isn’t pure, you’ll run into issues with trying to get the best results. If there’s simply less CBD in the product than claimed, you’ll run into issues with absorption and getting the you’re looking for. If there’s heavy metals or pesticides present, the product could be a danger to your health, and could even exacerbate the health issues you’re trying to manage.

What Companies Test & Why

  • To confirm purity: This is the primary reason for third party testing. It confirms that there is only hemp-derived materials in the product (or the only ingredients present are the ones advertised). It also confirms the concentration of CBD, which can be helpful for dosing. 
  • To avoid heavy metals and pesticides: The presence of heavy metals and pesticides can be harmful, and it also indicates a fundamental problem in the manufacturing process. 

Lab Testing: What to Look For

There are a lot of different kinds of third party tests a brand may conduct. Depending on what you want to avoid (or what you want to make sure you have), you may want to make sure that a specific brand conducts a specific kind of test:

Liquid Chromatography (or LC)

Liquid chromatography (or high-performance liquid chromatography, shortened to LC or HPLC respectively), is the test that is conducted to show what kinds of cannabinoids are present in a CBD product and what concentrations they have. 

This test is important if you are trying to use certain kinds of cannabinoids (for example, if a brand claims to have an added concentration of a minor , LC will prove that the cannabinoid is present at those higher concentrations). LC will also show which cannabinoids are lacking (which is important if you are buying , which only contains CBD).

Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR)

Polymerase chain reactions (or PCR) tests are used to make sure there isn’t contamination of bacteria, fungus, or other foreign biological substance. This test won’t tell you anything about what kinds of cannabinoids are present, but it will help to ensure there aren’t any harmful biological contaminants that you should avoid. 

For CBD products, the PCR test makes sure that the hemp was harvested and stored safely (mold can be a significant issue with harvested cannabis).

Mass Spectrometry (MS)

Finally, mass spectrometry, or MS, testing is used to confirm that there are no heavy metals present in your CBD product. Poor manufacturing standards are what most commonly cause heavy metal contamination, and heavy metal poisoning can cause severe health issues. 

Some brands may use MS testing to determine what cannabinoids are present, similar to LC. This is another common use for MS testing, though both LC and MS testing will provide the most accurate cannabinoid profiles.

Who Doesn’t Do it & Why

Since testing is so important, it may be confusing why a brand would skip the testing process. 

  • Testing costs money and is optional: Since the market is unregulated, brands don’t have to test their products. So, if one is interested in trying to make as much money as possible instead of providing a consistently pure, high-quality product, they may skip the testing phase. 
  • New to market: A brand may be brand-new to the market and not yet able to get tests back on their products. This could be an innocent mistake (maybe the brand is still learning how to best safeguard the purity of their product). Regardless, this is not a good reason to skip lab testing.
  • Communication : It’s very possible that a brand does conduct third party testing, but they don’t offer the lab results on their site. This is a frequent occurrence, especially for brands that may not rely heavily on online sales. If you come across a brand that looks great, but you can’t find the lab tests, ask! Almost any brand will provide lab results when requested (if they are getting lab tests to begin with).

If you come across a brand that seems suspiciously inexpensive, check to see if they offer third-party lab results. If they don’t, that’s likely why they can offer such cheap prices, and you should choose a more trustworthy brand.

There can be a lot of confusion about how CBD affects you. After all, it comes from (which is famous for getting people high), and many customers are concerned that using CBD will get them unexpectedly or uncomfortably high. 

So, is this a trick or a treat?

CBD Gets Your High: Trick

This is a trick. While CBD is found in cannabis, it is not intoxicating. The compound responsible for the traditional high associated with cannabis is THC, which is a restricted substance in most countries. However, CBD is unrestricted in most countries, largely in part to the fact that it ’t make you high. 

However, just because CBD doesn’t get you high doesn’t mean you won’t feel it. CBD can make you and can affect your mood, and there’s a small percentage of people who won’t tolerate the of CBD well. However, the vast majority of customers that use CBD will avoid some of the uncomfortable side-effects, especially if they start with low, comfortable doses.

TRICK or TREAT: All CBD Products is the Same

The market is full of CBD choices, and while there’s a in how you can take CBD, there’s not a difference in the CBD itself, right?

All CBD is the Same: Trick

This is a huge trick. There are enormous differences between CBD products (aside from products being oils, capsules, etc.). First, the kind of CBD used can be different. Customers are often surprised (and a bit confused), when they discover that there are three kinds of CBD:

  • Full-spectrum CBD: This is the least processed form of CBD. It contains all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids and found in hemp, which may help the CBD product be more effective. PhenoLife products use full-spectrum CBD in all of their products. 
  • Broad-spectrum CBD: This form of CBD is slightly more processed. It still contains many of the natural cannabinoids and terpenes found in hemp, with the noticeable lack of THC. This is why you should always make sure that any CBD products you buy are tested by a third-party lab, and that you have access to those results. Third-party testing is a common practice by high-end CBD brands, and it’s the only way you can know for sure what is and is not in your CBD product.

Anxiety can be difficult to manage for many people. Some may have trouble getting access to healthcare to get prescriptions, while others may struggle to handle the side-effects of anti-anxiety medications like Zoloft or Prozac. Another 2019 study showed that 79% of participants reported lower anxiety in the first month of using CBD, and those positive results continued to be reported the months that the study was conducted. If you have anxiety problems, and you want to stop taking traditional anti-anxiety medications (or you can’t take them or don’t have access to them) CBD could be an option.

TRICK or TREAT: CBD Helps When You’ve Gotten Too High

If you have legal access to THC products, you may have experienced a situation when you’ve gotten “too high.” While this won’t create a medical emergency, it can still be an uncomfortable experience that lasts for hours. 

There’s several purported home remedies (like sucking on a lemon or chewing peppercorns), but several people have begun to say that CBD might be able to help, too. So, can CBD help when you’ve gotten too high?

CBD Helps When You’ve Gotten Too High: Treat

Treat! There’s some early research that suggests CBD can help you from getting too high and can soothe a high that is too strong. Since THC and CBD with your endocannabinoid receptors the same way, if CBD attaches first, it will block THC from attaching, so you won’t get as high or for as long. 

CBD can also help soothe the negative side-effects of THC, especially increasing anxiety or stress. As we’ve already mentioned CBD can help to reduce anxiety, so it can help to level out your high if you begin to feel stressed or panicked. 

Research into how THC and CBD interact is still early, but if you have legal access to THC and accidentally get too high, then CBD might be able to help!

TRICK or TREAT: CBD Can Be Absorbed Through Your Skin

Most people know that you can inhale or ingest CBD to get results, but there are several different kinds of products that are now available on the market.. There are CBD-infused bath bombs, lotions, and even patches, all claiming to be able to deliver CBD into the bloodstream. It’s natural to be skeptical about this claim, so can CBD be absorbed through your skin?

CBD Can Be Absorbed Through the Skin: Treat

Treat! CBD can be absorbed through the skin, but there’s a bit of nuance that customers should be aware of. Topical products, or products like creams that are placed on the skin, will not pass into your bloodstream. They can provide relief where they are placed (for example, rubbing a CBD lotion on sore muscles), but you won’t get the benefits that you would from inhaling or ingesting. 

However, if you look at transdermal products, the story changes. Transdermal means that a substance passes through the skin into the bloodstream. Transdermal CBD products are usually patches (like the PhenoPatch), and they deliver CBD into your bloodstream like ingesting or inhaling. 

Transdermal CBD products have an enormous advantage in absorption. Before you dive into taking CBD, it’s good to understand what CBD actually is, where it comes from, and the different options you have to take it.

What is CBD

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is a cannabinoid naturally found in cannabis. Specifically, CBD is found in high concentrations in hemp, which is a type of cannabis that readily grows in a variety of different conditions.

Unlike other well-known cannabinoids, like THC, CBD doesn’t have an intoxicating effect on the user. It won’t make you high like marijuana (another kind of cannabis) will, because it doesn’t have high enough concentrations of THC and other cannabinoids that can create the classic “stoned” effect marijuana is famous for.

Ways to Take CBD

There’s a lot of different ways to take CBD, and each style of CBD offers unique :

Topicals (creams)

CBD can be absorbed through the skin, which means it can be directly applied to areas of inflammation for pain relief. CBD creams are common for this reason and are often used to relieve  aching muscles or joint pain related to conditions like arthritis.

Inhaler

CBD inhalers (or vaporizers) are a common way to use CBD. With this method, cartridges in the device are connected to batteries, which heat the CBD oil inside. This vaporizes the oil, which can then be inhaled by the user. Inhaling CBD creates a fast effect, but the effect doesn’t last as long as ingesting CBD through capsules or oils.

Capsules

CBD capsules are another common choice to take CBD. With capsules, all you have to do is swallow your preferred dose like you would a vitamin. Since the CBD is more concentrated, the effects will last much longer than the CBD you inhale. However, since it has to work its way through your digestive system before it hits your bloodstream, it will take longer to feel the effects. 

Unlike oils, capsules are pre-doses and tasteless, which may appeal to customers looking for a hassle-free way to take CBD.  

Oils

CBD oils were one of the earliest ways to take CBD, and they continue to be a popular choice. To use them, an eyedropper is used to pull out the oil (and the dropper is sometimes marked with measurements), and then the desired dose is dropped underneath the tongue. Oils, like capsules, offer a potent CBD experience, though they also take longer than inhaling CBD.

Unlike capsules, oils have a few roadblocks that may not appeal to some customers. First, the taste of oils can be , and the flavor of cannabis may not be appealing to some customers. Even when flavors are added, many customers don’t enjoy the taste. Also, it is difficult to precisely measure doses with oils, especially if your eyedropper doesn’t have measurements marked.

Patches

CBD patches are an easy way to get controlled, sustained doses of CBD. Since the CBD will pass through your skin, customers enjoy high levels of bioavailability, and patches can easily be worn during the day or through the night. Patches can take up to an hour to start taking effect, so other product forms will be a better choice for fast-acting relief.

CBD Quality

CBD is unregulated by most governments, including the U.S. and the U.K.) which means there’s no legal enforcement of purity or quality standards. This can make it difficult for beginners to find a quality product (and beginners who end up with subpar CBD products can be turned off from using CBD entirely).
